Bring Manolaki to Aplothika….

War operations in the Dodecanese

During the Italian rule, many Dodecanese were deported because of their patriotic activity or left to avoid the oppressive measures against them. One of them was Agapitos Zouroudis from Symi who, coming to Piraeus in 1936, joined the Greek Army and then fought in the Greek-Italian war in Albania.

One of the NSF boats like the one that transported commandos and spies.

After the German attack and the collapse of the Albanian front, Zouroudis returned to Piraeus trying to find a way to leave and continue the fight. After many attempts, he boarded a sailing boat from the Cyclades bound for the Middle East. The boat reached the coast of Asia Minor and, sailing close to the shores, set sail for Cyprus. But, as soon as the boat reached Cape Krios and entered the Doric gulf, Zouroudis asked to be taken to Symi, and because he insisted, the captain gave him the rowing boat of the ship and let him go.

The following is the narration of the eyewitness Nasos John Kassotis: “Far outside the port of Symi we see a rowing boat approaching with its sail raised. The wind had dropped, the boat was moving slowly, and its only passenger was drowning. When the boat came closer, we saw the Greek flag flying on the mast. The Italian police got upset and the carabinieri started running up and down the port. Several Symians gathered trying to guess who the bold countryman was. Most people who knew Zouroudis agreed: who else but ‘Crazy-Agapitos'”.

The Carabinieri arrested Zouroudis and put him in prison, but after a few days, in order to avoid feeding him, released him with the obligation to report to the Police morning and night, and for more security, they pulled his boat out to the Harani and took the oars.

In the meantime, when the tide of war began to turn, Turkey allowed small Allied bases to be established on its shores. One of them was on the Alepo peninsula (Bozburun Yarimadasi, in Turkish), near Symi and across from Rhodes, in the gulf of Aplotheka (ancient Lorima), headed by Panao George Paralis, born and raised in Symi, but when his family moved to Kasos he married there Marina Koutlakis. Later, when the war began, he took his father’s boat and with his brothers Elias and Kotso, went to Alexandria and placed themselves and the boat at the service of the Allies.

On the left side of the port of Symi is Harani, from where the boat to Aplotheka left.

One-night past midnight, someone knocked on the door of Zouroudis’ house in Armakia. But, when he opened it, he saw no one, only in front of the door he found a loaf of bread. He took it and as he was curious about it, inside a small hole was a piece of paper that read: “Bring Manolaki to the Aplotheca…Unknown”. He understood.

Paralis knew that the Allies were preparing a war operation against the Italian naval base of Leros, and the only one who could give them accurate information was Manolis Mantikos who, although young, had worked on the construction of the fortifications of Leros.

After Zouroudis reported to the Police and got dark, he went down to Harani with Mantikos, they threw the boat into the sea and “borrowed” the oars from a neighboring rowing boat. They took with them an empty tin, a small pitcher full of water, and half the bread that was left.

At the south-eastern end of the Alepo peninsula, Aplotheka is in a spacious bay.

It was Good Friday and as soon as they left from the Harani, they noticed that the Epitaph procession was taking place, although there was a blackout. They pulled right towards Cape Koutsoubas and from there they continued to sail all night along the western coast of Symi.

Before dawn they brought the boat ashore, unloaded the few things they had with them and the oars and hid them in the bushes. They took out the cork (plug) from the bottom of the boat and the boat filled with water. They added some stones and the boat sat on the bottom of the sea in 4-5 meters depth, they went and hid in the bushes and soon felt asleep.

Holy Saturday dawned, Zouroudis did not go to report and the boat had disappeared, the Police understood. They took a small gasoline boat and started looking around Symi. Sometimes they passed over the rowing boat sitting on the bottom of the sea without noticing it.

As soon as it began to get dark, they got out of the bushes, dived and took the stones out of the boat which came back to the surface, put the cork in its place and with the tin emptied the water.

From the eastern side of Symi they traveled until they reached Alepo.

They continued to sail and when they passed the strait that separates Symi from Seskli (ancient Teftlusa) they turned east towards Alepo until they reached the Black Cape (Kara Burun, in Turkish).

It was still night when they entered the gulf of Aplotheka, they waited for dawn and two or three Turkish Cretans led them to Parali’s headquarters, on a hill 20 meters above the sea. Mantikos gave the information they asked for and Zouroudis took the first ship to the Middle East.

  1. Agapitgo Zouroudi was my grand father’s brother! I would like to know from where you found this information? We always knew he was a character but never knew about this episode in his very colorful life.
Thank you so much for bringing to light this part of my uncles’ life.
