ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ. Απίστευτη η προσέλευση των προσκυνητών, των ιερέων και των ιεροπαίδων τόσο στον Αρχιερατικό Εσπερινό, όσο και στην Αρχιερατική Θεία Λειτουργία στη μνήμη του προστάτη της Μητρόπολης της Νέας Ιερσέης, του Αγίου Ιάκωβου Τσαλίκη του εξ’ Ευβοίας.
Οι εκδηλώσεις έλαβαν χώρα στην Ελληνορθόδοξη Κοινότητα του Αγίου Θωμά στο Τσέρι Χιλ της Νέας Ιερσέης και κατά κοινή ομολογία ήταν πάνδημες. Ξεκίνησαν το βράδυ της Παρασκευής, 20ής Νοεμβρίου 2025 με τον Αρχιερατικό Εσπερινό προεξάρχοντος του Μητροπολίτη Νέας Ιερσέης, κ. Απόστολου με συλλειτουργούντες τριάντα περίπου ιερείς και δεκάδων ιεροπαίδων και συνεχίστηκαν με το δείπνο που παρατέθηκε στο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο «Ντανιέλ Κουσούλη».
Οι εκδηλώσεις κορυφώθηκαν το πρωί του Σαββάτου, 21ης Νοεμβρίου 2025, με την αρχιερατική Θεία Λειτουργία προεξάρχοντος του Μητροπολίτη Νέας Ιερσέης, κ. Απόστολου.
Ο Μητροπολίτης Νέας Ιερσέης, κ. Απόστολος, κατά την διάρκεια της πρόσφατης συνομιλίας με τις «Αναμνήσεις» επεσήμανε ότι οι εκδηλώσεις διοργανώνονται με την ευκαιρία της 34ης επετείου της κοιμήσεως του Άγιου Ιακώβου Τσαλίκη του εξ’ Ευβοίας και θα επαναλαμβάνονται κάθε χρόνο σε διαφορετικές κοινότητες.
Παράλληλα αποκάλυψε ότι κατά την διάρκεια της πιο πρόσφατης επισκέψεώς του στην Μονή του Οσίου Δαυίδ Γέροντος Ευβοίας, στον δήμο Μαντουδίου υπέβαλε στον Ηγούμενο Γαβριήλ το αίτημα να δοθεί κάποιο από τα προσωπικά αντικείμενα του Αγίου, ώστε να το μεταφέρει στη Μητρόπολη Νέας Ιερσέης για την ενίσχυση των πιστών που ήδη τον είχαν ανακηρύξει προστάτη τους.
«Ο π. Γαβριήλ αρχικά απάντησε με σεβασμό ότι δεν ήταν δυνατόν, διότι στη Μονή είχε απομείνει μόνον ένα τελευταίο τεμάχιο από τα άμφια του Αγίου, το οποίο δεν είχε δοθεί μέχρι τότε. Ωστόσο, υποσχέθηκε πως θα το σκεφθεί και θα προσευχηθεί. Επιστρέφοντας από το παρεκκλήσιο, ο Ηγούμενος Γαβριήλ – με τα μάτια, βουρκωμένα – κρατούσε στα χέρια του το τελευταίο επιτραχήλιο του Αγίου. Μου το παρέδωσε λέγοντάς μας: «Αυτό ανήκει σε εσάς», επεσήμανε ο κ. Απόστολος.
Ερωτηθείς γιατί επέλεξαν τον Άγιο Ιάκωβο Τσαλίκη για προστάτη επεσήμανε ότι κάθε άλλο παρά τυχαία ήταν.
«Ο Αγίος Ιάκωβος Τσαλίκης είναι ένας από τους νεότερους Αγίους της Εκκλησίας μας και θελήσαμε με την ανακήρυξή του ως προστάτη της Μητροπόλεώς μας να υπενθυμίσουμε στις νεότερες γενιές των Ελληνοαμερικανών ότι η κάθε εποχή έχει τους δικούς της Αγίους, οι οποίοι φωτίζουν τον δρόμο μας», επεσήμανε ο κ. Απόστολος.
Το ιερό επιτραχήλιο τοποθετήθηκε σε μια χρυσοκέντητη θήκη που λάξευσε ο ξυλογλύπτης Ηλίας Λάσκος και συγκεκριμένα κάτω από το την εικόνα του Αγίου που φιλοτέχνησε ο αγιογράφος Γεώργιος Γιαρισκάνης, ο οποίος είναι και ο αγιογράφος του ναού του Αγίου Θωμά στο Τσέρι Χιλ.
Η εικόνα και η λειψανοθήκη θα αποθησαυρίζονται στην Ιερά της Μητρόπολης της Νέας Ιερσέης και την παραμονή και ανήμερα της Κοιμήσεως του Αγίου θα ταξιδεύουν με τις δέουσες τιμές σε μια από τις 55 κοινότητες της Μητροπόλεως.
Το βράδυ της Παρασκευής η εικόνα και το ιερό επιτραχήλιο έγιναν δεκτές με τις δέουσες τιμές και η λιτανεία τους εντός του ναού του Αγίου Θωμά ήταν επιβλητική και κάτι παραπάνω από συγκινητική.
Ο Μητροπολίτης εξέφρασε την ευγνωμοσύνη για τους χορηγούς των εκδηλώσεων, το ζεύγος Δρ. Σπύρου και Δρ. Αμαλίας Σπυρέα και το ζεύγος Γεωργίου και Ζωής Κουσούλη, γονείς της αείμνηστης Ντανιέλ Κουσούλη, που άφησε την τελευταία της πνοή την αποφράδα ημέρα της 11ης Σεπτεμβρίου 2001, λόγω της τρομοκρατικής επίθεσης στο Παγκόσμιο Κέντρο Εμπορίου της Νέας Υόρκης.

On Friday November 21st and Saturday November 22nd, the Metropolis of New Jersey celebrated the Patron Saint of the Holy Metropolis of New Jersey, Saint Iakovos of Evia (Tsalikis). The celebration, presided by His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos, took place at Saint Thomas Greek Orthodox Church in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
Overwhelming crowds of faithful and pilgrims from afar descended upon Saint Thomas to venerate the Epitrachelion (vestment) of Saint Iakovos which was donated to His Eminence by the Holy Monastery of St. David in Evia, where St. Iakovos was the Abbot.
This historic weekend was made possible by the efforts and vision of His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos of New Jersey in bringing the Epitrachelion along with a specially commissioned icon of the Saint wearing the Epitrachelion, to the Metropolis. The icon, commissioned by the Metropolis, was prepared by renowned iconographer Georgios Giariskanis from Thessaloniki, Greece.
The celebration of the feast of Saint Iakovos was presided over by His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos, as well as by the clergy and faithful throughout the Metropolis from New Jersey to Virginia. Led by its Proistamenos, the Rev. Georgios Oikonomou and its Parish President, Archon Anastasios Efstratiades, the Saint Thomas community warmly received His Eminence on Friday evening Hierarchical Vespers with the entirety of the Metropolis Clergy, the youth of the Delaware Valley, Acolytes of the Metropolis churches, the St. Thomas Hellenic Heritage Dance group, the Metropolis Council, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and many pilgrims in an outdoor prayer service and procession led His Eminence until they were brought to the Church and deposited in front of the solea. Upon conclusion of the Vespers, Rev. Father Oikonomou, Parish president Archon Efstratiades and the entire Parish Council presented an engolpio with Saint Iakovos’ icon to Metropolitan Apostolos, honoring his historic efforts.
At the end of the Vespers, Metropolitan Apostolos gave an inspirational sermon on the life and miracles of St. Iakovos. He retold testimonies, including personal experiences, of the miracles of the Saint. Every pilgrim was able venerated the Holy Icon and the Epitrachelion, and each was presented with a special blessing (a small icon of the Saint) by His Eminence.
After the Vespers, a dinner reception was hosted with the assistance of the tireless Saint Irene Philoptochos Society in the Danielle Kousoulis Center Hall. At that time the community thanked the many sponsors, volunteers, ministries and pilgrims from the communities of the Metropolis.
His Eminence thanked the benefactors of the Metropolis who made this icon possible, and the two grand benefactors of the weekend, Drs Spiros and Emily Spireas (represented by their son Sotiris Spireas) and George and Zoe Kousoulis (who made a contribution in memory of their daughter Danielle Kousoulis).
He also thanked the iconographer Mr. Giariskanis and the woodworker, Mr. Ilias Laskou, who prepared the gold plated case for the Icon and the relic. Both Mr. Giariskanis and Mr. Laskou flew in for the weekend from Thessaloniki for the feast of Sat. Iakovos. Mr. Giariskanis is also the Iconographer for Saint Thomas new iconography work that he is in the process of completing.
The Saturday morning Hierarchical Divine Liturgy led to more pilgrims venerating the relics. The Liturgy was presided by His Eminence Metropolitan Apostolos with the participation of a large number of Metropolis clergy. After the Liturgy, the community held a luncheon for all in the Danielle Kousoulis Center. At the luncheon, His Eminence announced that the Saint Thomas Church will have the relics for veneration from Sunday, November 23 through Wednesday November 26. With much appreciation, the community is hosting a Monday and Wednesday paraklisis to the Saint and and a Liturgy on Tuesday, November 25, with the relics at the solea for more pilgrims to venerate.
Saint Iakovos of Evia Tsalikis is a modern day saint who reposed in the Lord in 1991, was canonized by our Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2017 and whose feastday is celebrated on November 22nd.
