Στις 8 Νοεμβρίου 2023, στην «νεαρά» ηλικία των 99 ετών, έφυγε για το τελευταίο ταξίδι η Θεοδώρα Νικολάου Ματσάκη, θυγατέρα του Ηλία και Αφροδίτης Παπαγεωργίου. Οι γονείς της υπήρξαν από τους πρωτοπόρους Καρπάθιους μετανάστες στην Αμερική, και αυτή από τα πρώτα Καρπαθάκια που γεννήθηκαν στην Αμερική.
Επίσης ήταν μεταξύ των πρώτων Αμερικανογεννημένων ελληνόπουλων που επιδόθηκαν στις τέχνες και στις επιστήμες. Από το St. Louis University έλαβε το Bachelor of Fine Arts και αργότερα, από το ίδιο πανεπιστήμιο, το Master’s in Psychology.
Στα 20 της, σε μια Καρπαθιακή χοροεσπερίδα στο Saint John’s hotel στο Brooklyn, συνάντησε τον λοχαγό Νίκο Δημητρίου Ματσάκη, που εντυπωσιάστηκε από την ομορφιά και το χορευτικό της ταλέντο, και τον επόμενο χρόνο το 1945 ένωσαν την ζωή τους που κράτησε 64 χρόνια.
Ο Νίκος Ματσάκης ήταν και αυτός από τα πρώτα Καρπαθάκια που γεννήθηκαν στην Αμερική, και από τα αμερικανογεννημένα Ελληνόπουλα που επιδόθηκε στις επιστήμες. Σπούδασε οδοντιατρική και στον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο υπηρέτησε στο υγειονομικό τμήμα του Αμερικανικού στρατού φθάνοντας στο βαθμό του ταγματάρχη. Μετά τον γάμο τους εγκαταστάθηκαν στο St Louis MO όπου άνοιξε και διατήρησε οδοντιατρείο για πολλά χρόνια.
Από τον γάμο τους απέκτησαν τρία παιδιά που επιδόθηκαν στις επιστήμες, την ψυχολόγο και συγγραφέα Αφροδίτη, τον αστροφυσικό Δημήτρη και τον δικηγόρο Ηλία, που τους χάρισαν επτά εγγόνια και έντεκα δισέγγονα. Η Θεοδώρα αφιέρωσε τον εαυτό στην ανατροφή των παιδιών, τα έπαιρνε κάθε Κυριακή στην εκκλησία και στο Ελληνικό σχολείο και σε πολλές άλλες παιδικές εκδηλώσεις και δραστηριότητες. Αλλά και δεν παραμέλησε το μουσικό της ταλέντο, συμμετείχε στην St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra, και έδινε πολλές σόλο παραστάσεις με το βιολί.
Παράλληλα υποστήριξε τη ισόβια αφοσίωση του συζύγου της ως προέδρου της οργάνωσης Justice for Cyprus και επίτιμου προξένου της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας. Δακτυλογραφούσε και επεξεργαζόταν την αλληλογραφία σε πολιτικούς ηγέτες και εφημερίδες και φιλοξενούνταν δεκάδες συναντήσεις στο σπίτι τους.

On November 8, 2023, at the “young” age of almost 99, Theodora Nicholas Matsakis, daughter of Elias and Aphrodite Papageorge, left for her last journey. Her parents were among the pioneer Karpathian immigrants to America, and she was one of the first Karpathians born in America. She was also among the first American-born Greeks to devote herself to arts and sciences. From St. Louis University she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and later, from the same university, a master’s in psychology.
At the age of 20, at a Κarpathian ball at the Saint John’s hotel in Brooklyn, she met Captain Nikos Dimitriou Matsakis, who was impressed by her beauty and dancing talent. In the following year, 1945, they joined their lives that lasted 64 years.
Nicholas Matsakis was also one of the first Karpathians born in America, and one of the first American-born Greeks who devoted himself to sciences. He studied dentistry and in World War II he served in the Dental Corps of the American army reaching the rank of major. After their marriage they settled in St Louis MO where he opened and maintained a dental practice for many years.
From their marriage they had three children who followed highly successful careers, the psychologist and writer Aphrodite, the astrophysicist Dimitris, and the lawyer Elias. They gave them seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Theodora devoted herself to raising the children, taking them every Sunday to church and the Greek school and to many other children’s events and activities. But she didn’t neglect her musical talent. She participated in St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra for 64 years and gave many solo violin performances.
At the same time, she supported her husband’s lifelong dedication as president of the organization “Justice for Cyprus” and as honorary consul of the Republic of Cyprus. She typed and edited correspondence for political leaders and newspapers and hosted dozens of meetings at their home.
