Η κραταιά, όπως είθισται να αποκαλούμε την Ομοσπονδία Ελληνικών Σωματείων Μείζονος Νέας Υόρκης, θυμίζει ένα παλιό αυτοκίνητο με σοβαρές βλάβες που βρισκόταν εντελώς ακινητοποιημένο. Με πολλές προσπάθειες, οι μηχανικοί κατάφεραν να το εκκινήσουν. Η μηχανή λειτουργεί, έστω και με προβλήματα, αλλά το όχημα παραμένει χαλασμένο. Χρειάζεται καινούργια αμορτισέρ, φρένα, ιμάντες, αντλίες, τα πάντα. Το γεγονός όμως ότι η μηχανή ξεκίνησε μπορεί να το δει κανείς μόνο θετικά.
Στους μηχανικούς που κατάφεραν την επανεκκίνηση, συγχαρητήρια. Πράξατε με γνώμονα το συμφέρον της ομογένειας. Ελπίζουμε οι μηχανικοί που θα αναλάβουν τώρα να μην είναι οι ίδιοι που έφεραν το όχημα σε αυτή την κατάσταση, γιατί τότε το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι όχι μόνο δεν θα το επιδιορθώσουν, αλλά θα το καταστρέψουν ολοκληρωτικά και διά παντός.
Οφείλουμε να αναγνωρίσουμε τον ρόλο που έπαιξαν o Δήμος Σιώκης και η Νομική Κάστανα, καθώς και αρκετοί άνθρωποι που εργάστηκαν στο παρασκήνιο, αλλά και τις ηρωικές προσπάθειες της Εφορευτικής Επιτροπής που ανέλαβε τη διεξαγωγή των εκλογών της Κυριακής 14 Ιουνίου στο Σταθάκειο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο.
Η Εφορευτική Επιτροπή, με σύνθεση τον Γεώργιο Κίτσιο ως πρόεδρο, τον Λάκη Παπαδόπουλο ως αντιπρόεδρο, την Ελένη Χαντζή ως γραμματέα, τον Γιώργο Σερέτη και την Βάγια Αλαγιάννη ως μέλη, καθώς και τους Μανώλη Χριστοδουλάκη και Βασίλειο Μαξούτη ως αναπληρωματικούς, έκανε τα αδύνατα δυνατά και διεξήγαγε τις εκλογές με τον καλύτερο δυνατόν τρόπο, δεδομένων των συνθηκών. Κράτησε πολύ δύσκολες ισορροπίες και απέφυγε τις κακοτοπιές.
Είναι νωρίς για θριάμβους. Για να λειτουργήσει η Ομοσπονδία ομαλά χρειάζεται πολλή δουλειά και θεσμικές αλλαγές εκ βάθρων. Αισιόδοξα μπορούμε να πούμε ότι έγινε ένα σημαντικό βήμα αλλά τίποτα δεν θα αλλάξει αν δεν μπουν στην ηγεσία άτομα που δεν είναι μέρος του προβλήματος, αλλά μέρος της λύσης του. Όπως είπε κάποιος σοφός, παράνοια είναι να κάνεις το ίδιο πράγμα περιμένοντας διαφορετικό αποτέλεσμα.
Όταν, με το καλό, σχηματιστεί το Συμβούλιο, ελπίζοντας με χρηστή ηγεσία, θα επανέλθουμε με συγκεκριμένες θέσεις και προτάσεις. Μέχρι τότε, να θυμόμαστε ότι η Ρώμη δεν χτίστηκε σε μία μέρα. Οι κακοδαιμονίες, οι παθογένειες και τα προβλήματα του παρελθόντος δεν εξαφανίζονται με το χτύπημα μαγικής ράβδου. Ας ελπίσουμε ότι όλοι θα σταθούν στο ύψος των περιστάσεων, θα αναλογιστούν τις ευθύνες τους και θα πράξουν ανάλογα. Η Ιστορία θα τους κρίνει και θα τους καταγράψει είτε με χρυσά, είτε με μελανά χρώματα.
Για να γυρίσει ο ήλιος, θέλει δουλειά πολύ. Ώρα να ανασκουμπωθούμε όλοι.
The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York: A Step Forward — But Only One
The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York resembles an old car with serious damage that had come to a complete standstill. With great effort, the mechanics managed to start it up the engine is running, albeit with problems but the vehicle remains in poor condition. It needs new shocks, brakes, belts, pumps everything. The fact that the engine started, however, can only be seen as a positive.
To the mechanics who achieved this restart, congratulations. You acted with the interests of the Greek-American community at heart. We hope that the mechanics who will now take over are not the same ones who brought the vehicle to this condition in the first place, because if they are, the only certainty is that they will not only fail to repair it, but will destroy it completely and irreversibly.
We must acknowledge the role played by Dimos Siokis and Nomiki Kastana, as well as a number of people who worked behind the scenes, and the heroic efforts of the Electoral Committee that undertook the conduct of the elections of Sunday, June 14, at the Stathakion Cultural Center.
The Electoral Committee, composed of Georgios Kitsios as President, Lakis Papadopoulos as Vice President, Eleni Hantzi as Secretary, Giorgos Seretis and Vagia Alagianni as members, and Manolis Christodoulakis and Vasileios Maxoutis as alternates, made the impossible possible and conducted the elections in the best possible manner under the circumstances. It maintained very difficult balances and avoided the pitfalls.
It is too early for triumphalism. Much work is needed, along with sweeping institutional reforms, for the Federation to function smoothly. On an optimistic note, we can say that an important step has been taken, but nothing will change unless those who take the helm are part of the solution, not part of the problem. As a wise man once said, insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
When the Board is formally installed and we hope with sound and principled leadership, we will return with specific positions and proposals. Until then, let us remember that Rome was not built in a day. The dysfunctions, the entrenched pathologies, and the problems of the past do not vanish with the wave of a magic wand. Let us hope that all will rise to the occasion, reflect on their responsibilities, and act accordingly. History will judge them and record them in golden or in black letters.
For the sun to rise again, much work is needed. It is time for all of us to roll up our sleeves.–
