Η κυβέρνηση Τραμπ έθεσε σε αργία το προσωπικό των ραδιοφωνικών δικτύων Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe και άλλους οργανισμούς που χρηματοδοτούνται από αμερικανικούς πόρους, παγώνοντας αιφνιδιαστικά τις δραστηριότητες μέσων που θεωρούνται δημοκρατικά αντίβαρα σε χώρες όπως η Ρωσία και η Κίνα.
Εκατοντάδες δημοσιογράφοι και άλλοι εργαζόμενοι των Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe και άλλων οργανισμών έλαβαν σήμερα ηλεκτρονικό μήνυμα που τους πληροφορεί ότι απαγορεύεται η πρόσβαση στα γραφεία τους, ενώ ειδοποιήθηκαν να παραδώσουν τις δημοσιογραφικές τους ταυτότητες, τα επαγγελματικά τους τηλέφωνα και άλλο εξοπλισμό.
Η ανακοίνωση, που επικρίθηκε σφοδρά από οργανώσεις υπεράσπισης της ελευθερίας του Τύπου, εκδόθηκε μία ημέρα αφού ο Τραμπ εξέδωσε διάταγμα που κατατάσσει την κυβερνητική υπηρεσία στην οποία υπάγονται τα μέσα αυτά (USAGM) στα «άχρηστα στοιχεία της ομοσπονδιακής γραφειοκρατίας».
Ενας από τους εκπροσώπους Τύπου του Λευκού Οίκου έγραψε στο Χ «στο επανιδείν» σε 20 διαφορετικές γλώσσες, για να συνοδεύσει με την ειρωνική αυτή ανάρτηση την ανακοίνωση για το Voice of America που λειτουργεί σε πολλές χώρες και έχει εβδομαδιαίο ακροατήριο 350 εκατομμυρίων, σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της USAGM.
Ο επικεφαλής του Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, που ξεκίνησε να εκπέμπει στο σοβιετικό μπλοκ κατά την διάρκεια του Ψυχρού Πολέμου, χαρακτήρισε τις περικοπές στην χρηματοδότηση «τεράστιο δώρο στους εχθρούς της Αμερικής».
«Οι ιρανοί αγιατολάχ, οι κινέζοι κομμουνιστές ηγέτες και οι δεσπότες στην Μόσχα και το Μινσκ δεν μπορούν παρά να χαρούν για την εξαφάνιση του Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty έπειτα από 75 χρόνια» λειτουργίας, δηλώνει σε ανακοίνωσή του ο Stephen Capus.
Το Radio Free Asia δημιουργήθηκε το 1996 και είχε ως αποστολή την μετάδοση αλογόκριτων ρεπορτάζ σε χώρες όπου τα μέσα ενημέρωσης δεν είναι ελεύθερα όπως η Κίνα, η Βιρμανία, η Βόρεια Κορέα και το Βιετνάμ.

He has wrongly interpreted his narrow electoral plurality to have given his return to the pinnacle of power the mistaken authority to downgrade government efficiency through its thorough emasculation with the malicious intervention of the unelected co-president and fellow plutocrat Elon Musk. Now, we can add to the massive firings of departs the furloughs issued for the personnel of our international communication services —- the Voice of America, most prominently —- that present factual believable news abroad, having played a pivotal role in winnng the Cold War for the western democracies! Perhaps, you may wonder with me, on whose side is this president on? It manifestly appears daily that he offers aid and comfort to our sworned enemies in the totalitarian capitals of Beijing, Moscow, and Tehran the so-called axis of contemporary evil. Further advancing the deterioration of the underpinnings of our democracy, with its vital check on presidential hegemony, the 47th chief has operated with gleeful lawlessness. He has issued executive orders that are patently unconstitutional and often absurd —- superseding court orders, and declaring English the nation’s official language. His attorney general declares open fealty to the president personally and not to our Constitution. Moreover, he actively diminishes the prosperity and the world’s relative stability over eight decades by tearing down our NATO alliance and the multilateral agreements with our allies. Do such actions describe a friend or an enemy of our people? Is there any surprise that we rise each morning from often fretful sleepless nights? Can anyone doubt the imperative to resist and oppose such an emerging autocratic, for clearly he has extended his dictatorship beyond a first one day?
