... and the dance continues.

The president of the association, Merkouris Moschovi, thanks everyone for their presence and those who contributed to the success of the event.

Eirini Zouroudi-Caruso (left) and Eirini Peliou-Moshovi describe the custom of “Kukkuma”.

The song begins for the “Kukkuma” to open and the cutie to come out…

Close to tradition, the Symaic club “Aigli” celebrated “Kukkouma”.

By Manolis Cassotis

When at the beginning of the last century the massive immigration began in America, and as soon as several of our compatriots from the same island or village gathered in some American city, they founded an association. In this way, living in a foreign and unfamiliar place, they kept in touch with each other, preserving the cultural tradition of their place that they carried with them.

During the past century, several dozen Dodecanese associations were founded in America, among them the Symian Association “Aegle” which was founded in 1928, and was legalized by the state of New York the following year, and continues its activity to this day. Three generations passed through this association, passing the baton of “Aegle” from one generation to another, and a month ago the management of the Association passed to the fourth generation with the following composition:

President: Merkourios Moshovis, Vice President: Dimitrios Kontos, Secretary General: Irene Zouroudis-Caruso, Special Secretary: Zoe Pilios, Treasurer: Maria Lamaze, Councilors: Lefteris Rompesis, Giannis Tsouvalas, Anna Pavlo, Jenny Zouroudis-Fontana, Konstantinos Tsavaris, Anna Weber, Alex Contantopes.

Anna Leventeris-Weber, Katerina Tsavaris-Zourouri, Jeni Zouroudi-Fontana, Merkouris Moschovi and Michalis Leventeris (from left) offer traditional food.

In one month, the Association was reorganized and decided to organize its first event related to the cultural tradition of Symi and to give the members of the Association the opportunity to regroup, after the problems created by the Corona virus in the activities of all associations.

«Kukkumas»

May, since ancient times, has a special place in the Greek tradition, it is considered the month of flowers and vegetation and symbolizes the return of Persephone from Hades and the resurrection of life. According to mythology, May was named after Hermes’ mother, Maia. But the people, paretymologically associating the name of May with magic, consider it an enchanted month. In May they avoided weddings and important work. In Symi, the May festival, “Kukkumas”, is similar to the festival called “Klidonas” in other places celebrated on June 24.

In the very old days, “Kukkumas” was held in all the neighborhoods of Symi, so that the girls could see the man they were going to marry. On the evening of May Day, a girl whose parents lived took the “unspoken water” from 7 houses, whose housekeeper was supposed to be called Eirini, in a container called “kukkunari”. All the girls would throw their rings into “kukkunari” with the “speechless water”, cover it with a red cloth, tie it with a red ribbon, put a key on top and take it out on the roof to be seen by the stars.

The day after the divine service, the girls prepared food, usually dolmades and sweets, as well as a pie, with plenty of salt and “unspeakable water”. The pie was prepared upside down. With their hands, i.e., behind, they sifted the flour, kneaded and baked the pie.

In the packed “Andriotis” hall, several compatriots enjoyed the traditional event.

After the meal, they put a large pan in the middle and inside the “kukkunari”, after they uncovered it and put basil and other herbs on it, they all took a position around it and began to sing, beating their hands on a round copper pan, called “sini” (in free translation):

Let’s take out the kukkuma, let the cute one come out,
let the son come out of the famous and the daughter of the great lady.
Let’s take out the kukkuma.
On the 1st of May, on the 2nd of May, kukkuma I will take out,
and he is welcome, the one I love, I’ll marry.
Saint Athanasius, my master, come down from your throne,
to see joys and celebrations take place in your backyeard.
Let’s take out the kukkuma.
Around and around the “sini”, are beautiful partridges,
and next year to be well married and happy…

The song took a long time. Then the basilisk was taken out and a minor girl, with her parents alive, took the rings from “kukkunari” one by one, saying a male name at the same time. Then they would eat the savory pie and begin the dance, accompanied by the lyre and the lute, singing:

Girls sing and throw a quarter,
to make a present to the lyre player…

In the evening the girls, after much dancing and salty pie, were sure to be thirsty. They would dream that they went to a house to drink water. If the house, which every girl saw in her dream and she went to drink water, has an unmarried son, by the name they called her, taking her ring from the “kukkunari”, it was considered “certain” that she would take him for her husband.

Celebration

The event took place on May 6, in the “Andrioti” hall at the cultural center of Saint Catherine in Astoria. Early on, the Association started preparing the hall, along with the traditional foods and sweets, and by 2 pm the hall was full of members and friends of the Association. Among others, the event was graced by the presence of the president of the Dodecanese Federation Maria Maragou with the officials of the Board of Directors: Vice President Nikos Kartalis, General Secretary Adamantia Mari, Treasurer Evdokia Kambouri and the President of the Dodecanese Youth Sotiria Zouroudi-Kontou.

In his introduction, the president of the association, Merkouris Moschovis, thanked everyone for their presence and especially those who worked to make the event possible. He also emphasized that the new Board of Directors consists mainly of young people and asks for everyone’s cooperation and help so that the Association can continue its historical course.

Then Irini Zouroudis-Caruso described the custom of “Kukkuma” in English and Eirini Peliou-Moshovi in Greek, followed by the representation of the custom by the youth: Katerina Vasileia Caruso, Athena Felekidis, Bobby Felekidis, Konstantina Felekidis, Brigid Irene Lamaze, Michael Joseph Lamaze, Viki Malo, Eleftherios Moshovis, Vasilios Moshovis, Christina Weber, Lenny Weber and Michael Benjamin Weber.

Also on the same day, the Association celebrated the 78th anniversary of May 8, 1945, the day the Germans signed in Symi the surrender of the Dodecanese to the Allies. The vice president Dimitris Kontos spoke about the historic anniversary and at the same time presented a video with commemorative photos.
