ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ. Ενδιαφέρουσες με όλη την σημασία τις λέξεως ήταν οι εισηγήσεις των ομογενών ιατρών καθηγητών, των ερευνητών και των σπουδαστών που συμμετείχαν στο Ιπποκράτειο Ιατρικό Συμπόσιο με θέμα «Heart & Vascular Innovation: Emerging Science, Technologies and Future Therapies» (Καρδιαγγειακή Καινοτομία: Αναδυόμενη Επιστήμη, Τεχνολογίες και Μελλοντικές Θεραπείες), που διοργανώθηκε την Κυριακή 19η Απριλίου 2026 σε αμφιθέατρο στην καρδιά του Μανχάταν.
Το Συμπόσιο διοργανώθηκε από τον Ελληνικό Ιατρικό Σύλλογο της Νέας Υόρκης, που εφέτος γιορτάζει την 90ή επέτειο της ιδρύσεώς του και κατά κοινή ομολογία ήταν άρτια δομημένο και διοργανωμένο και το πιο σημαντικό παρείχε την δυνατότητα στα στελέχη και στα μέλη να ενημερωθούν για τις πρόσφατες εξελίξεις στην καρδιαγγειακή ιατρική, στην τεχνολογική πρόοδο και στις προηγμένες θεραπείες.
Το Ιπποκράτειο Ιατρικό Συμπόσιο ήταν υψηλού επιπέδου και το πιο σημαντικό αντάξιο του κύρους και της εμβέλειας των επιτευγμάτων των ομογενών γιατρών σε όλους τους τομείς της ιατρικής ξεκινώντας από την έρευνα και την διδασκαλία στις καλύτερες ιατρικές σχολές και των πρωτιών που κατέχουν οι ομογενείς γιατροί σε όλες τις ειδικότητες.
Ο πρόεδρος του Συλλόγου Αντώνιος Γασπαρής, ο οποίος ανέλαβε και τον ρόλο του συντονιστή του Συμποσίου μιλώντας στις «Αναμνήσεις» εξέφρασε την ικανοποίησή του για την θεματολογία, τις εισηγήσεις και το πιο σημαντικό την συμμετοχή των δύο γενεών των ιατρών.
Της γενιάς των καθηγητών των Ιατρικών Σχολών και των διευθυντών, προϊσταμένων και επιμελητών των καρδιολογικών και καρδιαγγειακών κλινικών από την μία πλευρά και της νεότερης γενιάς και συγκεκριμένα των 14 σπουδαστών και ερευνητών που παρουσίασαν τις εργασίες τους.
Το Συμπόσιο αποτελεί συνέχεια των Συμποσίων για τον Δρα Γεώργιο Παπανικολάου που έχουν ξεκινήσει προ τριών περίπου δεκαετιών με πρωτοβουλία του πρώην προέδρου του Συλλόγου και νυν προέδρου της Ομοσπονδίας Δρα Σπύρου Μεζίτη, του Συμποσίου στη μνήμη της Δρ. Μαρί Καλοποθάκη, του ετήσιου Συμποσίου για τον Όρκο του Ιπποκράτη και άλλων ιατρικών συνεδρίων που έχει οργανώσει ο Σύλλογος τόσο στη Νέα Υόρκη, όσο και στην γενέτειρα.
Εξ άλλου η απονομή των βραβείων «Dr. George Papanicolaou Award» στην Δρ. Ευγενία Γιάννου, «Dr. Mary Kalopothakes Award» στην Δρ. Ροξάνα Μεχράν και του «Hippocrates Award» στον Δρ. Νίκο Λαμπρόπουλο, ήρθε να επιβεβαιώσει την συνέχεια, την συνέπεια και την αφοσίωση της νέας ηγεσίας με επικεφαλής τον Δρ. Αντώνιο Γασπαρή στην αναβάθμιση του ρόλου του Ελληνικού Ιατρικού Συλλόγου της Νέας Υόρκης όχι μόνο στον τομέα της ιατρικής, αυτής καθ΄εαυτής, αλλά και στον κοινωνικό και τον φιλανθρωπικό τομέα.
Εισηγητές του Συμποσίου ήταν οι καθηγητές Δρ. Άγγελος Αϊφάρας Μελαϊνης, Δρ. Γιάννης Χατζηζήσης, Δρ. Παναγιώτα Χριστία, Δρ. Εμμανουήλ Χρύσσος, Δρ. Γεώργιος Ντάγγας, Δρ. Στέλλα Ντούρου, Δρ. Αντώνιος Γασπαρής, Δρ. Στέφανος Γιαννόπουλος, Δρ. Ευγενία Γιάννου, Δρ. Ηλίας Ηλιάδης, Δρ. Τζον Καραμιχάλης, Δρ. Πολυξένη Κοκκίνου, Αντωνία Κολοκάθη, Ιωάννα Κοσμίδου, Νίκος Λαμπρόπουλος, Δρ. Οι Δρ. Ευγενία Γιάννου και Δρ. Αντωνία Κολοκάθη αξιολόγησαν τις παρουσιάσεις των σπουδαστών και των ερευνητών της ιατρικής και συγκεκριμένα των Αθανασίου – Δημητρίου Μπακάση, Αλεξάνδρας Βεκιαρίδου, Νίκη Μπρισνοβάλη, Σοφίας Δόγγα, Χριστόφορου Ντόγκα, Θεόδωρου Καρανικόλα, Ευγενίας Κατέχη και Kiara Dzaferovic, Κόνι Κουτσού, Ολίβια Λίου, Μαρία Μαρινάκη, Βασιλική Πάτσιου, Ανδρέα Σαραντόπουλου και Μικαέλα Σιακαλή και απένειμαν στην Νίκη Μπρισνοβάλη το πρώτο βραβείο και στον Αθανάσιο – Δημήτριο Μπακάση, το δεύτερο βραβείο.
Κεντρικός προσκεκλημένος ήταν ο πρόεδρος του Libra Group, Γεώργιος Λογοθέτης, ο οποίος αναφέρθηκε στην προσωπική περιπέτεια της υγείας του και μεταξύ άλλων τόνισε: . «Πέντε χρόνια πριν, ήμουν μια ανάσα από το να χάσω τη ζωή μου. Και όμως, σήμερα είμαι εδώ» και απέδωσε το θαύμα στους Έλληνες γιατρούς που του έσωσαν την ζωή του.
Απευθυνόμενος στους γιατρούς, τόνισε το βάρος της ευθύνης τους: «Έχετε στα χέρια σας τις ζωές χιλιάδων ανθρώπων, ίσως και εκατομμυρίων με την πάροδο του χρόνου».
Η απόφαση της οργανωτικής επιτροπής να συνδυάσει το Ιατρικό Συμπόσιο με την αναβίωση του Όρκου του Ιπποκράτη προσέδωσε μεγαλύτερη αίγλη και κύρος στο συνέδριο. Η συμμετοχή του Δρ. Κωνσταντίνου Πάντου αντιπροέδρου του Παγκοσμίου Ιπποκρατικού Ινστιτούτου, του προέδρου του Ιατρικού Συλλόγου Αθηνών, Δρ. Γεωργίου Πατούλη του Δρα Αντωνίου Πολυδώρου Γενικού Γραμματέα του Παγκόσμιου Ιπποκράτειου Ινστιτούτου Γιατρών και Πρέσβης και της Δρ. Βικτόριας Πολυδώρου ήρθε να υπενθυμίσει στο ακροατήριο την συνεργασία του Ελληνικού Ιατρικού Συλλόγου της Νέας Υόρκης με τους Ιατρικούς Συλλόγους και φορείς της γενέτειρας.
Τέλος να σημειώσουμε ότι ο Κώστας Πικάδας δώρισε σε όλους τους συνέδρους το βιβλίο του με τίτλο «Phytobiosomes – Human Anatomy Revisited» (Φυτοβιοσώματα – Επανεξέταση της Ανθρώπινης Ανατομίας).

The Hellenic Medical Society (HMS) marked its 90th anniversary with the inaugural Hippocratic Medical Symposium on April 19 in New York City—a CME-accredited scientific convening that positioned the Society at the intersection of cardiovascular innovation, translational science, and global medical exchange.
Centered on the 2026 theme, “Heart & Vascular Innovation: Emerging Science, Technologies and Future Therapies,” the Symposium delivered more than 10 hours of accredited scientific programming across three dedicated sessions.
Over 30 leading experts participated, including physicians and researchers affiliated with major academic and clinical institutions such as Northwell Health, Mount Sinai Health System, Stony Brook Medicine, and NYU Langone Health.
The program featured more than 20 lectures spanning cutting-edge developments in cardiovascular medicine, translational research, and emerging therapeutic technologies.
A highly competitive Abstract session further underscored the Symposium’s academic rigor, with 13 presentations selected from more than 50 submissions—highlighting both established investigators and emerging scientific voices shaping the future of the field.
Beyond its scientific depth, the Symposium convened leaders across medicine, business, philanthropy, and the arts, fostering a multidisciplinary exchange rarely seen in traditional academic settings.
The result was an environment that combined peer-reviewed scientific discourse with broader cultural and intellectual engagement—prompting attendees to describe it as “not just a medical conference, but a defining moment in the evolution of our scientific community and that of the Hellenic Medical Society.”
HMS President and renowned vascular surgeon Dr. Antonios Gasparis opened the day by expressing his appreciation to a room filled with physicians, physicians-in-training, medical students, allied health professionals and guests: “Today, on a Sunday morning, many would say the most competitive time slot of the week, you chose to be here. You chose this room over sleep, over brunch, over time with your families. Some of you brought your families with you which makes this moment even more meaningful. Moments like this don’t happen by accident…they happen because you believe that what we are building together matters, not just for us but for the generations that will follow us.”
HMS Vice President Dr. Antonia Kolokathis spoke about the shared commitment and dedication of all those gathered to advancing healthcare and improving patient outcomes, with a focus on cardiovascular disease—one of the leading causes of mortality globally.
In a historic first, HMS presented all of its distinguished awards in a single ceremony:

• Dr. Roxana Mehran — Dr. Mary Kalopothakes Award, presented by Dr. Stella Lymberis
• Dr. Nicos Labropoulos — Hippocrates Award, presented by Dr. Stella Douros
Each honoree brought not only clinical excellence, but a deeply personal perspective on mentorship, responsibility, and the evolving role of physicians in a rapidly changing world.
Dr. Gianos spoke to the future of prevention, emphasizing innovation and access in combating heart disease while expressing gratitude to her mentors and those who inspire her.
Dr. Labropoulos struck a different tone, opening with: “I know this is a scientific symposium, but I am not here to give you tons of data. I am here to talk to you about imagination, my friends,” weaving together references from Hippocrates and Aristotle to Einstein, and even playing Mozart during his keynote.
Dr. Mehran, a renowned Iranian-American cardiologist who arrived directly from a 14-hour flight, delivered a powerful and urgent message on women’s health: “We as women are not just small men—we are biologically different…young women are dying, maternal mortality is at the highest rate it’s ever been, right here in the well-developed best nation of the world, the United States of America.”
The Symposium featured presentations by Drs. Angelos Arfaras-Melainis, Yiannis Chatzizisis, Panagiota Christia, Emmanuel Chryssos, George Dangas, Stella Douros, Steve Elias, Antonios Gasparis, Stefanos Giannopoulos, Elias Iliadis, John Karamichalis, Polyxene Kokinos, Ioanna Kosmidou, Stamatios Lerakis, Stella Lymberis, Anastasios Manessis, Ioannis Mastoris, Spyros Mezitis, Nicholas Morrisey, Stavros Mountantonakis, Alex Spyropoulos, George Syros, Apostolos Tassiopoulos, Ageliki Vouyouka, Stavros Zanos, and Theodors Zanos.
A competitive Abstract Session spotlighted the next generation of leaders with top honors awarded to Niki F. Brisnovali and Athanasios-Dimitrios Bakasis.
Artist Costas Picadas’ Phytobiosomes series transformed the space into an immersive reflection on biology, healing, and form.
The Symposium unfolded as a cultural moment shaped by presence, pride, innovation, and participation. The day drew a distinguished audience from across industries, reflecting the growing influence of HMS within the global Hellenic community.
Among those in attendance were George and Nitzia Logothetis, Olga Bornozi, Eftihia Piper-Pylarinou, Dr. Miranda Kofinas, members of the HMS Board, and former Presidents including Dr. George Yatrakis, Dr. Spyros Mezitis and Dr. George Dangas—reflecting continuity and enduring support across generations.
HMS President Dr. Antonios Gasparis welcomed special guest George Logothetis, Executive Chairman of Libra Group and the Chairman of Libra Philanthropies to the stage, expressing deep respect for a leader who consistently shows up—taking the time to meet with students, to listen, to guide, and to invest in their future. He emphasized that Mr. Logothetis’ support is not symbolic, but active and enduring, reflecting the very spirit of Hippocrates and Dr. George Papanicolaou, for whom philanthropy was not an idea, but an act.
In one of the evening’s most memorable and moving moments, Mr. Logothetis delivered a deeply personal speech centered on gratitude and resilience, noting, “My life has been saved several times by Greek and Cypriot doctors. Here we have the current generation, the next generation, the previous generation all in one room….thousands of lives, if not millions, are in your hands.”
His message to the young people in the room, “How can you become the best version of yourself, how can you become more than….aspire to more compassion, desire more wisdom, more empathy.”
The Symposium’s international scope was reinforced by the participation of the Global Doctors Hippocratic Institute, with HMS hosting and sponsoring a number of medical students from universisties in Greece and Cyprus as well as a Hippocratic Oath Ceremony.
What emerged from the inaugural Hippocratic Medical Symposium was not just a successful event, but a clear signal of intent. HMS has created a platform that moves beyond traditional boundaries—where science and humanity coexist, where innovation is grounded in ethics, and where the future of medicine is shaped not only by discovery, but by connection, openness, imagination and gratitude.
