ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ. O Ελληνοαμερικανός βουλευτής Τζον Σαρμπάνης ανακοίνωσε την Πέμπτη ότι δεν θα διεκδικήσει την επανεκλογή του και ότι θα συνεχίσει το έργο του μέχρι την λήξη της 9ης θητείας.
Στην ανακοίνωσή του ο κ. Σαρμπάνης εξηγεί τους λόγους για τους οποίους αποφάσισε να ανακοινώσει πρόωρα την απόφασή του (14 μήνες πριν την εκπνοή της θητείας) και τονίζει ότι θέλησε να δώσει την δυνατότητα στην ηγεσία του Δημοκρατικού Κόμματος να επιλέξει τον κατάλληλο για να παραλάβει την σκυτάλη.
Ο Τζον Σαρμπάνης ακολούθησε τα χνάρια του πατέρα του, του αείμνηστου θρυλικού ομοσπονδιακού γερουσιαστή Πολ Σαραμπάνη. Εκλέχτηκε θριαμβευτικά το 2006 και τον Ιανουάριο του 2007 ορκίστηκε και ανέλαβε και επίσημα τα καθήκοντά του ως ομοσπονδιακού βουλευτή της 3ης Περιφέρειας του Μέριλαντ.
Έκτοτε εκλεγόταν θριαμβευτικά. Η απόφασή του για την αποχώρησή από τα έδρανα του Κογκρέσου θα έχει αρνητικές συνέπειες ως προς την πολιτική ισχύ της ομογένειας στην Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων. Το λέμε και το υπογραμμίζουμε καθώς είναι πολύ δύσκολο μετά την αποχώρησή του να εκλεγεί ένας Ελληνοαμερικανός.
Ο ύπατος πρόεδρος της AHEPA, κ. Σάββας Κ. Τσιβίκος, μόλις πληροφορήθηκε την απόφαση του Ελληνοαμερικανού βουλευτή του Μέριλαντ Τζον Σαραμπάνη να μην διεκδικήσει την επανεκλογή του το 2024 εξέδωσε ανακοίνωση μέσω της οποίας εκφράζει την ευγνωμοσύνη για την πολυσχιδή δράση του κ. Σαρμπάνη και τονίζει ότι είναι δραστήριο μέλος της AHEPA.

Supreme President Savas C. Tsivicos has issued the following statement upon U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes’ (D-MD) announcement that he will not seek reelection in 2024:
We are grateful for U.S. Congressman John Sarbanes’ near two decades of public service in the U.S. Congress as a champion of the American Hellenic community and as a dedicated public servant to the constituents of Maryland’s Third Congressional District. His staunch advocacy for the policy priorities important to AHEPA’s mission—foreign and domestic—will be missed greatly.
Moreover, we are proud to call him a Brother Ahepan. He has been by our side during some of our Order’s proudest moments in recent history. The presentation of the Pericles Award to Civil Rights Icon John Lewis, whom he introduced, in 2015, and our participation at the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery March for voting rights, come to mind.
We are grateful for his appreciation and passion for volunteerism and service as demonstrated by his “Hellenism in the Public Service” campaign. The campaign aimed to shine a light on those ideals that we, as Ahepans, hold dear.
We wish him all the best in his next endeavor. We are confident that he will continue to contribute to the betterment of society.
B”H Among the several lawmakers in the People’s House none surpasses the record for progressive initiatives as the nine-term Congressman John Sarbanes. A scion of the similarly liberal late U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes (D-MD), I was present with him and supporters at a Manhattan restaurant when he announced his candidacy to claim the seat once held by his father! With special pride he stressed his marriage to Dina Eve, who is Jewish, and his three children now young adults. The Congressman has retained his youthful appearance, though now in his early 60’s. His secret wish to duplicate his father’s achievement for a Senate seat blocked by the state’s incumbent two of exceptional ability —- Van Heflin and Cardin, the latter chair of the Foreign Relations Committee —- John has decided to seek other avenues for meaning in his life. Public service, after all, in the best tradition, is never intended as a sinecure, but only an honorable interlude permitting the best in our citizenry to succeed the best our liberal democracy offers! Farewell, dear Congressman, congratulations for a job well done, free of scandal, always a supporter of our Jewish State, never succumbing to even a whiff of our Greek compatriots’ anti-Semitism!
