Με μια αναδρομή στο παρελθόν, ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αμερικής Ελπιδοφόρος αποχαιρετά τον πρώην Πάπα Βενέδικτο ΙΣΤ’ που έφυγε από τη ζωή προχθές σε ηλικία 95 ετών και του οποίου η σορός τίθεται από σήμερα σε λαϊκό προσκύνημα στο Βατικανό.
Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Αμερικής ενθυμείται την επίσκεψη του πρώην Ποντίφικα το 2006 στο Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο, την οποία χαρακτηρίζει «ορόσημο στο οικουμενικό μας ταξίδι προς την ενότητα». Ο Αρχιεπίσκοπος Ελπιδοφόρος προσεύχεται για την ανάπαυση του Βενέδικτου ΙΣΤ’, «ενός διακεκριμένου θεολόγου, αφιερωμένου στον διάλογο με την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία».
Μάλιστα, συνοδεύει τη σχετική ανάρτησή του στα μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης με φωτογραφία από την επίσκεψη του 2006, όταν και ο ίδιος διακονούσε στην Πατριαρχική Αυλή, στο Φανάρι.

B”H Reading our American Archbishop’s lean to the departed Pope Benedict XVI, a personage he had the fortune to encounter while the Orthodox leader was serving the Patriarchate in Istanbul, I know not whether to cry or smile ironically. For although hierarchies of any denomination appear accepting, welcoming, even “forgiving” for what they perceive errant beliefs in their competitors, such feelings are absent in the flock —- Christian Orthodox —- that I am consistently exposed. For the common people, I heard with my ears, Catholics (more than a billion faithful) are considered outside Christianity, not really adherents of a savior who when living did not consider himself … Christian! Still, I welcome the nominal commitment of Orthodoxy for dialogue with Roman Catholics; perhaps, eventually, the former will be struck with the lightening of Reformation and Enlightenment to reach out to Jews, their maligned brethren, my People who gave them their savior (a Jew in every respect)! May the new secular year bring forth sectarian and political progress in understanding, and respect for the diversity that G-d intentionally presented us as a challenge to meet and learn to live!
